Back in 2003, BostonSports purchased the contents of a Vermont General Store located near my ski cottage at Sugarbush North. This store was filled with old sports memorabilia including an autographed Babe Ruth Baseball and lots of cobalt depression glass, sewing thimbles, an old barbers chair, and a roll-top desk. Among the other things were cases of license plates that were stored in the soggy basement. At one time these plates were obtained from passers by and visitors to this quaint shop. Listed below is a list of several plate lists of those items that were computer catalogued for sale. E-mail for availability. You will need Microsoft Excell to open the lists.

WANTED!!!!! Did you know that Massachusetts was the first state to issue license plates in 1903 starting with the #1 plate pictured above with Fredrick Tudor of Brookline the proud owner. Pictures courtesy of the Boston Public Library. As a collector I have been very interested in them since my grandfather left me approximately 20 plates tacked up in his garage at his home at 799 Commonwealth Avenue in Newton, Mass. Since then my collection has grown to over 40,000 plates and validation stickers and at one time I had over 80,000 plates. I collect all kinds and collaborated with the Registry of Motor Vehicles in putting together a history of Massachusetts plates. This can be seen at http://www.state.ma.us/rmv/history/index.htm I am presently working on getting a single-digit thru six-digit plate of every year that Massachusetts made plates. The low numbers especially single and two-digit plates are very hard to come by. I have recently completed the three, four, five & six-digit runs from 1903 to present. Even if you have one of these I still would like to add yours to my collection as a possible upgrade or trader. Won't you send me your plate and look around to see if you have any other issues. Massachusetts in 1996 passed a "year of manufacture statute" which states that an antique vehicle owner may display a plate from a year of manufacture of the vehicle on the vehicle and legally register that vehicle to the old plate. These old plates have become desirable by antique auto buffs. Here's a list of plates I have for sale. I check with the registry of Motor Vehicles to make sure the number is clear. Typical costs for a plate are $85.oo and $135 per set plus shipping, for plates available for YOM registration.
